5 Ways to Stop a Headache

  1. TAKE A STEP BACK: Sitting too long at your computer, running around doing chores and errands, involving yourself too long in a stressful situation are all ways to build up tension causing headache. Take a moment to step away from what you are doing, breathe and ground yourself. If you can go outside for a couple of minutes, the fresh air will help clear your head and send oxygen to tight areas.
  2. SELF MASSAGE: the pressure from tension headaches is greatly relieved by working on the back of the head, where the spine meets the skull. Feel around that area, if there are any sore points, dig your fingers in and release the pressure. With both hands, work all the way down your neck, applying pressure to the side of your cervical spine and sweeping out to the sides of your neck. Come down to your shoulders and gently but firmly work out any knots or tension there. To finish, with your hands on your shoulders, pull your hands forward, dragging them towards your chest. Close your eyes and take 3 deep breaths.
  3. DRINK A GLASS OF WATER: Most headaches are caused by dehydration. When you feel one coming on, reach for that water glass. Make sure you hydrate frequently throughout the day. A good trick to make sure you are getting enough water is to purchase a 1 L glass bottle and fill it up every morning. Take frequent sips throughout the day and refill when necessary. This way you will keep track of how much you are actually drinking!
  4. SQUEEZE YOUR BIG TOE AND THUMB: The big toe and thumb are reflex points for the head. Giving them a firm and long lasting squeeze whenever you feel a headache, will help release pressure and send blood and oxygen to your head.
  5. WORK THE AREA BETWEEN YOUR THUMB AND FIRST FINGER: This area is a major Energy Gateway Point in the body. If too much Energy is congested here it can cause headache. Gently but firmly apply pressure to any sore spots and breathe.
